The President and Educational Director
Tewi Gleeson, who then lived on the Andaman coast near Phuket, decided at age 18 that she wanted to pursue higher education, which at that time was only available in Bangkok. Her mother, a local teacher, did her utmost to encourage her, well appreciating the benefits which such an education would bestow on her daughter, even being prepared to make considerable sacrifices to do so. This, initially, involved taking a second job at night to help pay for Tewi’s university course fees, there being no free tertiary education in Thailand.
After successfully obtaining a B.A. Economics, Tewi found employment in Bangkok, sending at least 50% of her income back home, which her mother used towards paying for the education of Tewi's step-sisters. Five years later, deciding she wished to enhance her educational qualifications, Tewi embarked on an M.A. course, which, once again, required sacrifices from her mother, although because Tewi’s earning capacity by now had improved considerably, these sacrifices were less onerous. After attaining her M.A. in Marketing and Management, but still not satisfied, Tewi then decided to take a Ph.D in Educational Leadership, which made her mother inordinately proud. Her mother was further impressed when Tewi made her a promise that she would return home and help educate the children on the Andaman coast when she finally attained her doctorate.
Then on December 26th, 2004, disaster struck the Andaman coast in the form of the tsunami, which tragically swept Tewi’s mother away, never to be found. Ironically, throughout her educational career, Tewi had worked so diligently so as to be able to send funds home that for twenty years, she never once managed to go home to see her family, although she did manage to see her mother when she came up to Bangkok to attend Tewi’s various graduation ceremonies. Accordingly, her mother’s death was even more poignant as a result of so few contacts. Furthermore, the prime, beachfront land that was Tewi and her brother’s birthright was also taken from her.
F.A.C.E and Educational Support for the Underprivileged
Despite the tragedy and the loss of potential funds, the TLS Language School was determined to help the underprivileged children and orphans of the Andaman area, especially as much of the government compensation went towards rebuilding efforts in the more prosperous tourist area of Phuket, while neglecting Tewi’s home neighbourhood. Accordingly, the school set up a foundation called F.A.C.E (Foundation for Arts, Culture and Education) partly in the memory of Tewi’s mother. The school is also currently in the process of building a school for the orphans of this affected area of the Andaman coast, and 4 acres of land was bought in Krabi, which the Thai government decided was the most needy area and where a school will provide the most benefit. It will also be the only English programme institution within a 100km radius. The school is intended to be the most eco-friendly in Thailand, being designed by Dr. Soontorn, a famous ‘green’, environmental architect.
Apart from the school in Krabi, TLS Language School is helping to support a government school for orphans in Ayutthaya, just north of Bangkok. The children board at the school, which provides for all their material and social needs. However, in order to aid with their upkeep, before school the children work in the neighbouring fields and tend to the fish in an onsite pond, which provides some of their food. After school, the elder children work in local cafes etc. for subsistence wages of Bt20/£0.30/US$0.58 cents per night. The school director maintains that the monthly cost of sustenance per head is approximately US$30. TLS Language School currently supports five of these children.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that the Ayutthaya school is in dire need of contributory support. Accordingly, if any kind-hearted soul can see their way to making any contribution whatsoever, it will be greatly appreciated.
